In the Kilcoy Global Foods (KGF) project, Evo Energy Technologies expertly integrated three Combined Heat and Power (CHP) units totalling 4000kW, alongside high-efficiency heat pumps and a sophisticated Biological Desulphurisation Treatment system, transforming waste into renewable energy. This innovative approach not only propels KGF towards greater energy self-sufficiency but also significantly advanced its commitment to sustainable and environmentally responsible operations.

Significant reductions in energy costs and grid dependency

Overview

The Kilcoy Global Foods Co-generation Project centred on the installation of three Combined Heat and Power (CHP) engines, totalling 4,000 kW (two 1.2 MW Avus 1000b units and one 1.5 MW Avus 1500b). These engines generate 4 MW of renewable electricity onsite, significantly reducing reliance on the grid.

Supporting the CHP system are three Evo Command commercial heat pumps, which supply 100% of the facility’s hot water requirements. Together, the electricity and hot water production is equivalent to powering around 4,000 Australian households annually.

Kilcoy Global Foods became the first certified carbon neutral large-scale beef processor in Australia through this fully integrated renewable energy system.

A key feature of the project is a sophisticated Biological Desulphurisation Treatment system, which ensures the biogas produced from Kilcoy’s two large anaerobic digesters is effectively purified for use in the power station. This system includes the TS Biological scrubber, low and high-pressure biogas delivery blowers, a gas dehumidification system, and two 2000L activated carbon tanks that remove hydrogen sulphide (H₂S) from the biogas stream.

The Evo Command heat pumps also maintain optimal operating temperatures within the scrubber and support the gas chilling process, ensuring stable and efficient system performance.

Through this fully integrated solution, Kilcoy Global Foods has become the first certified carbon neutral large-scale beef processor in Australia, setting a benchmark for energy efficiency and sustainable meat production.
