The integrated system delivers a substantial reduction in the centre's energy consumption, energy costs and carbon emissions, supporting the City of Sydney's sustainability commitments. The project was awarded the 2021 National SPASA Award for Sustainable Project, with gold and high commendations across three categories at the state level.
Overview
Cook & Phillip Park Aquatic Centre is a City of Sydney public aquatic and fitness facility in the Sydney CBD, home to an Olympic-sized pool that operates year-round with heating and plant running costs to match. The City of Sydney has committed to net zero emissions across its local area by 2035, and its own facilities are part of that push, so a large energy user like Cook & Phillip Park is a natural candidate for an efficiency upgrade. Combining a CHP engine with heat pumps and chillers lets a site like this recover heat that would otherwise go to waste, cutting both energy costs and the load on separate heating equipment, and EvoET was engaged to deliver this kind of central energy plant upgrade at the centre.
The system delivers
The upgrade centres on a 250kW 2G Agenitor 406 natural gas CHP unit, supported by gas boilers and a complete plantroom refit, alongside four EvoHeat CS-GEN2 pool heat pumps and two Evo Ultra chillers. The chillers supply cold water to the air handling units for air-conditioning while their hot water heats the Olympic-sized pool, so efficiently that one unit is often enough to meet the centre's heating needs.
