Overview
Evo Energy Technologies delivered a completed biogas cogeneration system for Kia Ora Piggery, a family-run farrow-to-finish operation in northern Victoria housing approximately 24,000 pigs across multiple sites. The project formed part of a broader strategy to reduce escalating energy costs while materially lowering the farm’s carbon footprint.
The system captures methane biogas from covered anaerobic ponds treating pig effluent, transforming a high-impact waste stream into a reliable on-site energy source. The recovered biogas is used to generate electricity, while waste heat from the generation process is captured and reused for hydronic shed heating, delivering consistent thermal energy for animal welfare and operational efficiency.
Outcome
This integrated approach has delivered substantial outcomes, including an estimated 81 percent reduction in greenhouse gas emissions and annual electricity savings of more than $100,000. The project also supported Kia Ora Piggery’s participation in verified methane capture initiatives, generating Australian Carbon Credit Units through measurable emissions reductions.
With the system now fully operational, Kia Ora Piggery has established a scalable bioenergy platform that strengthens energy security, lowers long-term costs, and demonstrates the role bioenergy can play in modern, sustainable agricultural operations.
