Overview
The Coombabah Wastewater Treatment Plant, operated by Gold Coast Water, is one of the largest treatment facilities on the Gold Coast, serving the city's growing northern suburbs. Wastewater treatment is energy-intensive, but the plant's digesters produce biogas as part of the treatment process, a ready renewable fuel for on-site power generation. To put that resource to work and support the City of Gold Coast's environmental objectives, Gold Coast Water engaged Evo Energy Technologies to deliver a cogeneration and biogas treatment upgrade, with Pensar as principal contractor.
The system delivers
The upgrade comprises a 550kW 2G Avus 500plus cogeneration unit, a three tank activated carbon biogas scrubbing system and a 2G gas dehumidification system, conditioning the digester biogas for reliable use as engine fuel. The unit generates electricity to offset the facility's consumption, while the recovered heat keeps the digester system operating at optimal efficiency.
The system delivers
The system produces around 4,000MWh of renewable electricity each year, significantly reducing the plant's reliance on external electricity and lowering its operational costs. The project demonstrates how wastewater facilities can turn a byproduct of the treatment process into a dependable source of on-site power.
